Refurbishment and accessibility improvements at Queens Park Health and Fitness

Queens Park Health and Fitness is set to benefit from further investment this November, with a programme of improvements designed to enhance both the customer experience and accessibility.

To enable these enhancements to take place, the swimming pool will temporarily close on Monday 2 November to allow essential refurbishment works to take place, reopening on Saturday 14 November.

The improvement programme includes:

  • A complete repainting of the pool hall
  • Installation of new energy-efficient LED lighting
  • Upgrades to glazing to improve energy efficiency and comfort
  • Completion of essential pool tiling works

Go Active is currently offering a revised swimming programme in the interest of safety due to loose tiles on the deep end floor, with only the shallow end of the pool open.

The upcoming closure, while primarily to enable the wider pool hall refurbishment and lighting upgrade, will also grant time to complete these essential repairs.

The improvement programme represents yet more investment in facilities at Queens Park Health and Fitness, following the recent installation of a new, fully accessible 'Pool Pod' lift, providing independent and dignified pool access for people with reduced mobility.

People who could benefit from the Pool Pod include wheelchair users, individuals with spinal or neurological conditions, people recovering from injury or surgery, older adults with limited mobility, and pregnant women seeking a safer way to access the water. Unlike traditional hoists, the Pool Pod allows users to control access themselves via a specialist wristband.

And earlier this year, the centre's gym benefitted from further investment of £225,000, with a suite of the latest Precor strength and cardio machines and the addition of EGYM - an easy-to-use, digital workout system that adjusts to you.

Councillor Stephen Claybrook, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, said:

"These latest improvements demonstrate our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, accessible facilities for our communities. The refurbishment will create a brighter, more welcoming environment, while our new Pool Pod ensures more people can enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits of swimming with greater independence and confidence."

Customers are encouraged to use alternative Go Active St Helens swimming facilities at Newton-le-Willows Health and Fitness during the temporary closure. Normal service will resume when the pool reopens on Saturday 14 November.
