Have a spellbinding night with St Helens Libraries on Harry Potter Book Day
Join St Helens Library Service for a spellbinding night of fun for all young wizards, witches, and muggles this week to celebrate Harry Potter Book Day (Thursday 8 October).
Article date: 6 October 2026
Created by Bloomsbury Publishing, Harry Potter Book Day is a chance for fans around the globe to celebrate J.K. Rowling's iconic series of the boy wizard with events, parties, and other festivities.
As in previous years, St Helens Borough Council's Library Service will be getting in on the action with a not-to-be-missed free after school event.
This year's main event will take place at Eccleston Library which will be transformed into the wizarding world of Harry Potter, with magical crafts and activities. Smaller themed activities will be held across other St Helens Libraries.
The Sorting Hat will help you to find your true Hogwarts House, and tying in with this year's theme 'Spells and Potions' will be a special Potions Class activity and crafts. The event will also see the return of a selection of fantastic beasts for visitors to handle, courtesy of Animal Take Over.
Fancy dress is encouraged but not required, and there's a prize for best costume up for grabs.
Encouraging families to attend, Councillor Stephen Claybrook, St Helens Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, said:
"Harry Potter Book Day is always a fantastic opportunity to bring families together and celebrate the joy of reading through one of the world's most beloved book series.
"Our libraries team always puts together a magical event packed with themed activities, crafts and hands-on experiences that will immerse visitors in the wizarding world. Whether you're a lifelong Harry Potter fan or discovering the stories for the first time, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
"I would encourage families to come along, get involved, and make the most of this free event. We look forward to welcoming witches, wizards and muggles alike for what promises to be a spellbinding time at Eccleston Library."
Harry Potter Book Day at Eccleston Library will take place on Thursday 8 October between 4pm-6pm.
