New policy to set out flag flying protocol

Cabinet is set to consider a new Flag Policy when it meets later this month, which sets out the protocol for when and how flags will be flown, alongside the process for future requests for flags to be flown.

The policy marks out a list of available flags that can be flown above council buildings across St Helens. This includes:

• Union Flag; 

• Four constituent British Nations; 

• Lancashire Flag; 

• Armed Forces Flag;  

• St Helens Council Flag (Annual Council); and 

• St Helens RLFC Flag. 

The policy also sets out the process for how flags may be changed in line with national or royal guidance or when the flag may be flown at half mast as a mark of respect. Community groups and residents can also make suggestions for other flags that may be added to the list.

Council Leader Councillor George Woodward said: "We are a proud borough, and flags are an important way that we can recognise St Helens Borough Council's role as a civic lead in our country, region and borough. This new flag policy, devised using national guidance, will make clear how we show our support and put in place the protocols for any changes to the current list, and we would welcome suggestions from the public for any suitable flags that could add to the collection of approved flags."
