The funds will go towards the remediation works to make the land at Sussex Grove fit for developers to build new homes.
Councillor Richard McCauley, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: "The St Helens Local Plan made clear our commitment to bringing brownfield regeneration to the fore in our plans for sustainable growth. This is the right thing to do, but it brings challenges such as decontaminating previously developed sites to make them ready for positive reuse, and this requires significant investment to make it viable. So, we are delighted that our bid for Government funding has been approved, which will unlock the site for new high-quality homes to be built for future generations of St Helens residents."
St Helens Borough Council's Cabinet has accepted the funding of £651,927 through an urgent leader's decision to make quick progress on the plans.
The funding is the third success in bidding through the One Public Estate Brownfield Land Release programme, having previously been successful in claiming funding for St Helens town centre and Evelyn Avenue in Parr.
Councillor McCauley added: "As a council our sound plans in place for sustainable development have had significant backing from successive Governments, which highlights the hard work by officers to make clear cases to support our housing growth agenda. This is just the latest example of where we are working hard to bring investment into our borough to help shape a brighter future for us all."
