Newly qualified children's social workers celebrated

A group of newly qualified children's social workers have been recognised for their achievements after successfully completing the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) programme with St Helens Borough Council.

The 12-month ASYE programme is well established in St Helens, providing new social workers with the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence in a structured and supportive environment.

At a recent celebration event, Councillor Nova Charlton, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, joined the group to present certificates and congratulate them on their accomplishments.

Councillor Charlton said:

"We recognise all the hard work you do. Social work is arguably the most difficult job in the council but a noble profession, and you should all feel proud of your achievements. It takes a special kind of person to do what you do.

"We'll be making sure this is a regular event, recognising the commitment, dedication, development and progression of social workers in St Helens who go above and beyond every day for children and young people who are our number one priority as a council."

Among those completing the programme was Lily Barfield, who began her journey with the council as a student social worker in 2023 before progressing into a qualified role within the children's duty team.

Lily said:

"Day to day, I respond to referrals, complete assessments, and work closely with families and partner agencies to ensure children are safe and supported. The best part of the job is building relationships with families and seeing positive change, though it can be challenging managing high caseloads and complex situations.

"For anyone considering social work in St Helens, I'd say it's a supportive place to learn and grow. Be prepared to be busy, but you'll be well supported."

St Helens Borough Council's Children's Services is rated Good with Outstanding features by Ofsted.
