St Helens Borough Council Cabinet approves suicide prevention report

 Article date: 4 September 2025

Developed by a dedicated Task and Finish Group in partnership with local health organisations, the report examines suicide rates in St Helens and sets out a series of recommendations to strengthen prevention efforts across the borough.

The review was launched after council monitoring reports highlighted a concerning rise in suicides, particularly in the period following the COVID-19 pandemic. While positive progress has been achieved in recent years through schools, workplaces, and community-led initiatives, local rates remain high. This reflects wider challenges such as the cost-of-living crisis and longstanding health inequalities.

Evidence gathered during the review emphasised the profound and far-reaching impact of suicide - affecting an estimated 100 people for every life lost. The Task and Finish Group consulted councillors, public health officers, NHS providers, Healthwatch, and community representatives, drawing on both local and national data. The review also considered the existing Suicide Prevention Strategy and the crisis support services provided by partners including Mersey Care.

The resulting recommendations and action plan focus on:

  • Expanding suicide awareness training

  • Strengthening crisis response models

  • Ensuring coordinated, evidence-based action across local agencies

Councillor Andy Bowden, St Helens Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care & Health, said:

"Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy that leaves a lasting impact on families and communities. I would like to thank everyone involved in producing this important piece of work, which helps us take further steps to reduce suicide rates in the borough.

"We are under no illusions that a lot more needs to done, but by working closely with health partners, schools, employers, and community groups - and by putting these recommendations into action - we can build on the progress already made. Mental health - especially to the point of feeling suicidal - should never be a taboo subject and we want to ensure people receive the right support at the right time."

Cabinet has noted the findings and will provide a full response later this year.

St Helens Borough Council - together with partners - will host an annual suicide memorial event at St Helens Town Hall from 6:30pm on Tuesday 30  The event is free to attend, but booking is advised. To reserve a place, please visit: https://StHelens-Suicide-Memorial-2025.eventbrite.co.uk
